The History of Shui Yi Do
Shui Yi Do means, open mind or open to one’s own way. Shui Yi Do embodies the philosophy of openness and adaptability, free from the constraints of traditional martial arts styles. Rather than adhering to a single discipline, it combines elements from various styles ,adapting them to suit the individual practitioner. This approach helps fighters enhance their performance by addressing their unique needs, making them versatile and efficient in combat.
To better understand what Shui Yi Do is and how it relates to combat, we’ll need to start from the very beginning. In the early 70’s just after the Bruce Lee craze, two brothers Bob and Charlie Bucholz began studying Kung Fu San Soo under Master Al Ruben, who was Grandmaster Jimmy H. Woo’s number one student. As time went on, they found themselves with more opportunities to partake in other styles, such as Taekwondo, jujitsu, Wing Chun, Shotokan Karate, Judo, Tang Soo Do, and Western Boxing. In doing so their eyes were opened to each of their primary techniques as well as the flaws of wasted movement. Discouraged, they began to gravitate toward the theories and philosophies of a multi-fighting style called Jeet Kune Do, developed by Bruce Lee himself. The brothers followed suit and decided out of respect to the late Bruce Lee known in China as, “Li Xiao Long” (The Little Dragon Lee), “Li Siu Lung Do”, was officially born.
The Brother’s became sponges, learning every technique, takedown, and striking combo that they could get their hands on, from anyone that was willing to show them. Keep what works and disregard the rest. Li siu Lung Do was now a compilation of several fighting styles and had truly become a mix of martial arts. Over the next 25 years their underground schools flourished in garages, backyards, dungeons, and basements that produced many practitioners that would exhibit their own unique fighting skills.
Li Siu Lung Do had always been a kung fu based combat and though it was evolving into much more, this foundation was strong. By the late 90’s both brothers had their own ideas in which direction Li Siu Lund Do should go. With so many outside influences and strong personalities the brother’s could no longer see eye to eye, and their relationship became estranged.
Charlie feared that the very existence of Li Siu Lung Do was in danger of becoming watered down and limited to the classical mess that they strived to avoid. So he decided in order to preserve the pure essence of this system, he would replicate the very foundation in which it was built and Shui Yi Do was created.
In this revolutionary hybrid martial art, “The Warrior of the old ways joins the new”. For many years only selected pupils were allowed to undertake its training. Now for the first time in the year 2020, East meets West and Shui Yi Do goes public.
